Scoil Uí Chonaill vs Lucan Sarsfields - Inter Hurling Championship
Final Score: Scoil Uí Chonaill 0–18 | Lucan Sarsfields 0–19

The match began at a frantic pace. Scoil Uí Chonaill got on the scoreboard early through Oisín Benham and Brendan O’Connell, both striking fine points from play. Lucan responded through their talisman Joey Dunne, who was deadly accurate from placed balls and from open play.

Both sides were guilty of wides in the opening stages – Finn Daly and Rob Kennedy missed early opportunities for Scoil, while Lucan’s Darragh Meehan and Dunne also struck efforts off target. Still, the quality of play was high, with midfield battles fiercely contested, particularly involving James Conway for Scoil and Cian McHugh for Lucan. By the break, little separated the teams, with Lucan holding a slender advantage thanks to their clinical free-taking.

The second half followed a similar pattern – end-to-end exchanges, hard tackles, and long-range shooting. Scoil Uí Chonaill’s forwards, particularly Rob Kennedy (0–6 from play) and Finn Daly (0–5, including two frees), led their attacking charge.

Barry Cushion (0–2), Joey Ryan (0–1), Brendan O’Connell (0–1), Oisín Benham (0–1), Neil O’Flynn (0–1), and Eoin Finnegan (0–1) all chipped in with vital scores to keep the home side in touch.

Lucan, however, continued to rely on the accuracy of Joey Dunne, who finished with eight points (four from frees, three from play, and one from a 45). Supporting scores came from Cian McHugh (three from play), Darragh Meehan (two from play), Ryan Clancy (0–1), and Brendan Kavanagh (0–1).

As the clock wound down, Scoil looked poised to force a draw, but a couple of late wides under pressure proved costly. In the final moments a breakthrough run from Anthony McNulty who laid off to Conor Dillon to point insured a victory for Lucan. We now have a home semi against Crumlin in two weeks time, all support welcome!

Football
Inter football - Sun 21/09/2025
Lucan Sarsfields 2-11 (1-8) St Mary’s 0-10 (0-2)

Once upon a time this would have been All Ireland Football Final Sunday. This may not have brought 83,000 to Saggart, but it was still the equivalent of a final. Another win or bust, for both sides. The quarter finals awaited the victors. True to tradition Lucan had a big panel. More lads returning to the fold. Impossible to satisfy everyone. It could have been much harder, as we have a number of long term injuries in Cathal, Colm, Seamus and Louis. The unused subs on this occasion are as integral to the team as those in the starting XV. No panel. No team.

The day was bright and sunny, but the pitch was very soft, and there were plenty of spills along the way. Lucan matched the day with a bright start, and a couple of points early on. Mary’s were making some progress playing downhill. Lucan were under strict instructions to keep it tight, especially for the opening quarter. No goals. At least not into our goal. Mary’s had a period of ascendancy, and although they levelled matters with a couple of scores, they were also wasteful with a number of wides. Lucan were forcing them to play across the 45m line, and when frustrated they attempted scores that were poor options. Tony was deployed as a sweeper, and was repeatedly the man in the right spot to choke attacks at source. He even had time to get forward and edge Lucan ahead, to break what had been a 13min hiatus of any scores. It felt as though Mary’s having battered on the door for so long, lost a bit of heart, and when Ross was able latch onto the ball inside the square a goal was on the cards. He completely fooled the keeper by dropping the ball, and then completed a neat pick up, before blasting past the mesmerised keeper. No, he did not fumble the ball. It was all planned. Lucan had the famed purple patch, and further scores from Charlie & Donie, and a skyscraper 2 pointer from Ross, saw Lucan with a 9 point half time advantage.

Mary’s are a proud club, and they came out with all guns blazing, but although they won the 3rd quarter 0-4 v 0-1, 0-3 were from placed balls, and the Lucan defence were consistently forcing Mary’s to shoot under pressure. Cormac was having an old fashioned tussle with his opposite man. Both of them seemed to end up on the floor on each occasion. Cormac may have been lucky to only incur a single yellow card. Rian mixed the good and the bad. Some outstanding fielding of high balls, and then some sloppy errors. Lost the run of himself! I think that is what he said. Oran was commanding on the edge of the square. I was going to describe it as quietly commanding, except that he was anything but quiet on the day. Rob, Alan, Ryan and later Michael provided a good screen for the defence. Ryan asked me not to mention his powerful run from defence. So I won’t.

Lucan ran on Michael, Andy, Callum, Noel and Oscar, and it might just as easily have been any of the others on the line. Michael returning from his foreign gallivanting seemed none the worse for it. Andy kept winning ball and laying it off to break open their defence…..we should have done better from these opportunities. Callum is progressing well. Just did his job. Noel was unlucky not add a neat score that would have been handy at the time. Oscar came on late for a hard working Keith, and fielded a kick out between 2 Mary’s midfielders. A real statement.

As in the first half it felt as though Mary’s ran out of ideas. Lucan had left a few opportunities behind them, but finally a great through ball from Tim was won cleanly by Sean. Did he shoot or pass? Only Sean knows, but the ball found its way across the Mary’s goalmouth to Oisin, who gratefully accepted this gift. Ross added 2 points, and Lucan were happy enough to sit back and ensure there were no late goals. Cormac conceded a free, on the 14m line. Mary’s went for a snap shot which Conor produced a brilliant save to keep the ball out of the bottom corner. Ref called it back and Mary’s took the point. If it had beaten Conor would he have called it back? Another thing we shall never know.
