This may feel a trifle late. It is well late. Mostly because my head was totally melted after this game. Even now I am not sure I have fully recovered my faculties. Although there is some doubt if I ever had any! This was a roller coaster. Having lost to Plunkett’s on our first outing, this was a Final. Win or bust. Welcomed back 5 lads that had been missing from the last day and were feeling a certain level of confidence. Nothing too flash, just a hope that we were better than the previous day.
Well, the start was pretty flash. 3 mins, 3 attacks, 3 points! Oisin, Ross and Sean had given us the ideal launch pad. Vins settled and then burst our balloon with the same trick twice. They got a big midfielder in on the edge of our square, and in the space of 90 secs had the ball in the back of the net. 3 up, had very quickly become 3 down.
Keith brought it back to a single score with a boomer from well outside the arc, but Vins were controlling the middle third at this stage a\nd were working the ball inside and popped 4 successive scores. Again, Lucan wrested the initiative back, and added 0-3 including a brave score from Louis, on a referee’s advantage, after he had taken some serious abuse. Time was up and Lucan would have been happy to head for the Jaffa Cakes with a 2-point deficit, but again we were cut open and allowed 2 very late quick points, leaving us 0-4 down at the turn.
All the talk at half time was that we just needed to close down the soft scores we were conceding, and get quick ball to the lads up front, who we were confident had the measure of their markers. So much for that line of thinking on the restart. The oft called “championship quarter” belonged to Vins. 6 points without any response from Lucan, and things were looking ominous. Perhaps another reason for the delay in putting this down on paper lies with my inability to even remotely explain what happened over the final 12 mins (+6 added mins). Lucan were 10 points adrift as the match hit the 38th minute. Noel finally broke the blank canvas. Not to be outdone by the first half scoring feats from the opposing midfielders, Tim finished off a sweeping move beyond their keeper, and 10 was now 6 points adrift, and maybe there was hope! 2 mins passed and Ross found himself all alone at the far post, and another green flag sent the levels of optimism soaring. The Lucan cavalry had arrived and all of them with points to prove, were making an impact. Tony and Rian were picking up a lot of ball in midfield; Brendan was full of running; and Andy & Oscar were troubling the man keeping the score.
All well and good, but Lucan were still 3 points adrift, and the sands of time were running low. A good attack yielded an opportunity, that seemed to be drifting wide, but our umpire extraordinaire, Colm leaned on the post. Just enough for the ball to come back into play and drop right into Tim’s breadbasket. He rattled the net from all 5m. 10 down had become 2 up in 12 mins. Vins pressed forward. There had been a number of stoppages, so there was going to be plenty of added time. The Lucan defence, Colm, Oran, Ryan, Rob and Cormac were breaking up those attacks, and each was greeted as if it were a score. Lucan got forward on the break and Oscar and then Ross pushed the gap out to 4 points. Still the ref kept his whistle in check. A long Vin’s kickout went right over midfield and fell into the hands of the right man for Vin’s. He had the pace and ultimately the accuracy and left Conor no chance. Back to a single point. Think we need a defibrillator for this kind of thing. Conor got his kickout away, and not for the first time it was the defence that were able to “keep the ball green” until the ref finally sourced that whistle.
