Lucan Sarsfield’s Club Notes
Biodiversity Group
..."because it's important to us all"
As spring approaches, the daffodils flower and the grass starts growing the LSBDG plan on several new initiatives on the clubs' grounds for the next few months.
We have already planted almost 2,000 trees (the Miyawaki forestry method) in December 2024 behind the goalmouth on Pitch 1 and sprouts are already appearing. Lucan Sarsfields is part of Ireland's 100 million tree initiative.
We are planning on rewilding some grass verges around our site to promote pollination and we will soon install some bug hotels around the club. So, excuse the appearance of unkept grass areas. This has been fully thought out and discussed.
We have already put two bat boxes on a post behind pitch 1.
We are now planning to construct a rockery with native heathers and bee friendly plants outside of the AWP and plant other pollinator -friendly plants at various areas around the club.
And of course, we will try to keep up appearances with summer planting of colourful plants in our new flower gardens.
Why......"because it's important to us all"

LUCAN SARSFIELDS v FINGAL
1-18 (0-8) 2-13 (1-11)
This had a whiff of championship fervour about it. Ref played as if new rules had never been invented, which didn’t make an awful lot of difference except that without the possibility of 50m sanction, the players reverted to old habits very quickly, and there were more verbals in first quarter than in all our previous league and challenge games! Ravens are a big team, and it was obvious from the throw in that Lucan needed to keep moving and avoid contact. Not sure that was a policy that we were adept at pursuing. The opening quarter was nip and tuck. Point for point. Brendan opened his account and then kept adding to it. Tony and Oisin also gave some assistance. 25 mins in, we were level pegging at 0-8 apiece. Ravens had had the advantage of the wind and the hill, and heading to the break on equal terms seemed like a good result. Charlie had had to come ashore with muscular pull, and Andy had gone in on the edge of the square, but for the final minutes of the half, all the action was down around the other square. Ravens were looking for some advantage ahead of the whistle and pressed up aggressively on Conor’s kick outs. They picked up a couple of handy frees, and a good point from play, and then added the coup de grace, with a “final kick of the half” goal. A sweeping move from midfield ended with Conor outnumbered, and very little that he could do.
A 6-point deficit had come out of nowhere, but elements seemed to favour Lucan for the 2nd period, so a confident feel to half time words. Keith won the throw in. Bren was out in front to win the quick ball. Turn and over the bar. Then repeat the dose. 2 mins in, and deficit down to 4 points. Happy days didn’t last long. Very similar to the previous goal, Ravens raided in numbers, and those big men were impossible to stop. But this was only 4 mins into the half, so lots of time to come back, but for the next 22 mins there was all sorts of excitement, but little in the way of scoring. Rob came ashore after taking a knock, and Louis was introduced. Donie replaced Tony. Michael popped one, and was unlucky not add to that; Brendan got another 2 points, but they replied with a couple of their own, meaning that as we approached the final 8 mins Lucan trailed by 6, and were struggling to find any rhythm.
This is a new full back line, Cathal, Cormac and Oran, and are still feeling their way into the season, but there’s a sense that they are growing into those roles. Oran is taking it to extremes. He completed 2 terrific blocks in the game. Late in the 2nd half his intervention kept Ravens at bay when matters were still up for grabs; earlier he had dived in and taken the ball full in the face. A bloody nose, but his good looks are none the worse. Probably none the better either!
What was needed was a bit of drama….and cometh the moment, cometh the man. Seamus latched onto a loose pass and as he broke out from defence, he took a proper haymaker to the breadbasket. The howl he let rip was heard back at the 12th Lock. As the ref searched for his selection of colour coded cards, the guilty Raven’s lad was heard to remark that Seamus was wasted in Rolestown, his natural habitat was The Abbey. Lucan needed a dramatic finale…..Keith launched a long ball from midfield, the ball went loose on the edge of the square, and Andy pulled the trigger. Goals win games? Well, this didn’t win the game, but it did change the narrative. Bren pointed. And then again. Seamus returned from Abbey Street, and almost goaled. The point kept up the pressure. Sam made a terrific run and saw his shot fly past the far post. Tim tried another long, high ball. Referee after consultation with umpires awarded a 45. The Raven’s sideline were having a meltdown, and a debate broke out with the ref as to the correct scoreline. When this settled down it was agreed that the sides were level at 1-16 v 2-13……but Bren still had a 45 to take. It sailed between the posts. Noses in front, with only added time to negotiate. The negotiations would put the Good Friday agreement in the ha’penny place. It certainly went on too long, and involved much agonising on the line, but in the end we got there. Cian went on a long meandering run that took him from his own 45 to the end line, and almost back again! Eventually he laid it off, and Andy got his hammer out again, with the insurance point.
This was a smash and grab of monumental proportions, but it showed true grit to grind it out.
