Lucan Sarsfields’ Intermediate hurlers secured their place in the Championship semi-finals following a dramatic one-point victory over St Olaf’s in their final group game.

With qualification still to be decided, Lucan knew they needed a strong performance and, above all, a win to give themselves the best possible chance of progressing. What followed was a thrilling and closely fought championship encounter, with both sides playing at a high tempo and very little separating them throughout.

Lucan started brightly and showed plenty of attacking intent, but Olaf’s were equally dangerous and ensured there was never any opportunity for Lucan to pull comfortably clear. Scores were traded throughout the contest as the game developed into a real battle, with every point becoming increasingly important as the final whistle approached.

Evin Dowling led the way with a strong contribution to the Lucan tally, while Hugh Cuffe and Charlie Mulqueen also chipped in with important scores. Cathal Doody’s penalty proved another crucial moment in a contest where ultimately every single score mattered.

Olaf’s continued to respond and kept the pressure firmly on Lucan, ensuring the outcome remained in doubt right until the closing stages. With just a point separating the teams, Lucan had to show plenty of composure and determination to see the game out.

The final whistle brought a 2-21 to 2-20 victory and completed Lucan’s own part of the job. Their final qualification position still depended to some extent on results elsewhere in the group, but those results ultimately fell into place and confirmed Lucan’s passage to the semi-finals.

It is a deserved reward for a campaign in which the team have continued to battle and improve, and attention now turns to a Championship semi-final against Setanta on Saturday week 10th October.

The sides have already met during the group stages, when Setanta came away with an eight-point victory. That result will add an extra edge to the semi-final, with Lucan now getting an opportunity to turn the tables when it matters most.

After coming through such a tight final group game and securing their place in the last four, Lucan will head into the semi-final knowing exactly what Setanta can bring — and determined to produce the performance required to book a place in the Championship final.

 

Our Senior hurlers also came out on top against Erins Isle in comprehensive fashion on Sunday afternoon and will now face Kilmacud Crokes in the Semi Final on Sunday 11th October in Parnell Park. Best of luck to both our Senior and Intermediate teams.

Our Junior A and Junior B hurlers saw their Championship campaigns come to an end at the semi-final stage last weekend.

While both teams will be disappointed to have come up just short of a County Final appearance, they can look back with pride on two excellent campaigns and the commitment shown throughout the season.

A huge thank you to all the players, management teams and everyone involved behind the scenes for the time and effort put in throughout the year. Two great Championship runs and plenty to build on for next season.

 

Lucan Sarsfields 1-15
 

Lucan’s Minor A Camogie team booked their place in the Championship semi-finals with an impressive victory over St Vincent’s on Saturday afternoon.

Following a win over Ballyboden St Enda’s and a defeat to Kilmacud Crokes in their opening two group games, Lucan went into the final fixture knowing that victory was required to ensure progression to the knockout stages.

The opening half was a cagey affair, with both sides guilty of some unforced errors as they battled to gain control of the contest. Playing with the wind, Lucan managed to establish a two-point advantage by half-time, but knew an improved performance would be needed after the break.

The players responded superbly. Having addressed the issues from the opening half at the interval, Lucan returned to the pitch with renewed energy and began moving the ball with far greater confidence and purpose.

The defence were outstanding throughout the second half, working tirelessly, winning turnovers and providing the platform for Lucan to attack. With the supply of ball improving, the scores began to follow and Lucan gradually took control of the contest.

A strong second-half display eventually saw Lucan run out 1-15 to 0-06 winners, securing their place in the Championship semi-finals.

A special mention also goes to Izzy Kennedy and Poppy Kennedy, who played their first minutes of Minor A Camogie Championship and certainly didn’t look out of place at this level.

Lucan now travel to face Na Fianna in the Championship semi-final on Saturday, 10th October, as the girls look to take the next step and book their place in the County Final.

We’re delighted to welcome our youngest stars back at the Lucan Sarsfields GAA Academy.

Our Academy is all about giving boys and girls the chance to get active, have fun, make new friends and enjoy their first experience of Gaelic Games in a friendly and welcoming environment.

New players are always welcome! No previous experience is needed — just come along and give it a go. If your child has a friend, neighbour or schoolmate who might enjoy it, bring them along too! The more the merrier.
