Lucan Sarsfields Senior Camogie recorded an excellent 0-15 to 0-12 victory away to Castleknock in Group A of the PTSB Dublin Senior 1 Camogie Championship, following a hugely competitive contest in Somerton.
There was little between the sides throughout. Castleknock held a narrow 0-10 to 0-08 lead at half-time, with the teams having been level on three occasions during an entertaining opening half.
Lucan responded impressively after the break. Goalkeeper Amy Gorman played an important role with some excellent distribution, while Emma Flanagan brought plenty of experience to the Lucan defence. Laura Quinn was also heavily involved as Lucan began to turn the contest in their favour.
The scoring contributions were spread across the Lucan attack. Sinéad Daly produced an outstanding display at corner-forward, hitting six points from play, while Aoibheann Stokes also contributed six points, five of those coming from frees. Eva Collis added two important early scores.
It remained a remarkably tight contest, with the sides level on five occasions. As the game entered its closing stages, Lucan finally began to establish some daylight. Quinn’s point helped move the visitors 0-13 to 0-11 ahead before Castleknock reduced the deficit once more.
Lucan finished strongly when it mattered most. Stokes fired over a crucial point from play before Daly capped an excellent individual performance with the final score of the game, sealing a deserved three-point victory, 0-15 to 0-12.
Manager John O’Connell praised the efforts of both teams afterwards, describing it as a superb contest and highlighting the quality and competitiveness of the Dublin Senior Camogie Championship.
The result gives Lucan their second victory from three championship outings, following an earlier one-point win away to Na Fianna and a defeat to Ballyboden St Enda’s.
A fantastic championship win on the road for our Senior Camogie team and another important result as the group stages continue. 🟢⚫
U16D Football Championship Championship
Lucan Sarsfields 1-16 (19) St Mary’s 1-12 (15)
Lucan Sarsfields opened their U16 D Championship campaign with an excellent four-point victory over St Mary’s in a highly competitive clash between two sides who enjoyed successful league campaigns.
There was very little between the teams throughout the first half, with both sides playing some fine football and taking their chances well. St Mary’s held the narrowest of advantages at the interval, with Lucan trailing by just one point at half-time.
Lucan produced a strong response after the restart. They began to take greater control of the contest, worked the ball well and showed plenty of composure when the opportunities arrived. The new two-point score also played an important part in the game, with Lucan landing three two-pointers, while St Mary’s struck two of their own.
With the game still very much in the balance heading into the closing stages, Lucan showed great character and determination. A strong finish saw them turn that half-time deficit into a four-point winning margin, eventually coming out on top on a scoreline of 1-16 to 1-12.
It was an excellent team performance against a strong St Mary’s side, with Lucan displaying patience, work rate and plenty of resilience to come from behind and get the Championship campaign off to a winning start.
👏 Well done to all the lads and coaches — a brilliant start to the U16 D Championship!
