Junior F Hurling Champions

Congratulations to the Junior B Hurlers on their championship win on Sunday. Full time. Score: Lucan Sarsfields 0-16 to St James Geals An Caislean 0-13. See match report below.

Lucan's Junior B hurlers secured the Dublin Jun "F" hurling championship with a hard fought and in the end a nail-biting win over St. James Gaels An Caislean in Bunting Park on Sunday afternoon. This was a tight and tense affair between two teams that were unbeaten right through the round robin stage of championship, and the result was in doubt right up to the last minute of injury time.

The home team made the brighter start, getting the first three scores and dominating play in crucial areas of the pitch. However, after a nervous opening few minutes, not helped by a few wides, Lucan settled with Adam Duffy finding his range with two frees. The Lucan defence were now getting to grips with the Caislean danger men with Ben O'Keefe, Dillon Ryan and Conor Mulqueen to the fore. Lucan did not have it all his own way up front hard, and they found scores hard to come by against a resolute Caislean defence  who were not yielding an inch. A clever pass from Adam found Cian Ryan in space and he duly split the posts to level up matters.  Two great scores from Neil O'Leary and accurate free taking by Adam edged Lucan in front for the first time but the home side traded point for point and the sides went in level at the break 8 points each.

Lucan were forced into a change at the break when the unfortunate Finan Breen pulled a hamstring, Jack MacCarthy stepping in. Conor Dolan also started the new half. The second half was as close as the first with nothing between the sides, but gradually Lucan lads took the initiative and by the mid-way point they had opened up a three-point lead.  Scores by Jack, Cian and Adam made the difference. At the other end, a powerful performance at corner back by James Scott highlighted by a superb overhead catch which snuffed out a dangerous Caislean corner forward, the cool head of captain Tiernan Swords, superb goalkeeping by young Freddy Heran and a never say die attitude from Joey McSweeney all contributed to a strong defensive performance. Midfielders Liam Farrell and Cian Ryan got through a mountain of work, breaking up play and providing the link between backs and forwards.

Up front, twins Shane and Conor Dolan proved a handful for their respective markers, while Kevin Gormley never yielded an inch to a strong wing back. As the clock ticked down to full time, Lucan held a three-point lead but try as we might we could not get that insurance score to give us breathing space.  And how we could have done with that insurance point as the drama was about to hit fever pitch in the third minute of injury time. A breaking ball in the Lucan square was won by Cian Ryan who appeared to react quickest to catch a bouncing ball and drive it up the pitch. No, said the ref who after consulting with his umpire and a little help from the home sideline, decided that Cian had picked it off the ground.  He didn't have a blade of grass under his fingernails. A 21M free was awarded to An Caislean, a goal to draw it and send the match to extra time or a save to win it. Lucan supporters watched the drama unfound through their fingers, but they need not have feared as the free was superbly saved by Freddy, the ball was cleared, and the referee blew his whistle to bring the drama to an end. A great end to an entertaining contest fought between two evenly matched teams.

The cup was presented by county board official Paddy Kirwan to captain Tiernan Swords. Tiernan made a lovely acceptance speech, thanking the opposition, and his teammates, reflecting on 32 years of hurling, some filled with heartbreak but the honour of lifting that cup made it all worthwhile. Queue the celebrations and congratulations.

The team and management would like to extend a big thanks to the travelling Lucan support who had to make the difficult choice between supporting the senior hurlers in Parnell Park or the Junior B's. We know you made the right decision, and we hope this young team did you proud.

Hurling
Both our Senior Hurling and Inter Hurling teams have reached their respective finals. They will be played on the weekend of the 25th/26th of October. Make sure to save the date!
Lucan Sarsfields inter hurlers advanced to the Championship final after a commanding performance against Crumlin at 12th Lock. Despite the cool and overcast conditions, Lucan’s attack was red-hot, firing over 30 points in a dominant display of accuracy and work rate.
Crumlin battled hard and found the net twice through their number 12, but they were outgunned by Lucan’s relentless point-taking and superior movement around the middle third.
Preliminary date for final is Sunday 26th October at 2 pm in Parnell Park, all support is welcome
Final score Lucan 1-30 Crumlin 2-14
