It is with great sadness we inform you of the passing of Donal Griffin.

Dónal was originally from Ballydowd Grove, the son of Ina and the late Bill Griffin, of Griffin’s Pharmacy, The Mall, Lucan.

He attended St Mary BNS School and then, undoubtedly influenced by his father’s upbringing in Causeway, Co Kerry, went on to secondary education in famed football nursery, St Brendan’s College, in Killarney.

He was a lifelong member of Lucan Sarsfields, starting his playing career at Under-11 and helping that team win the South Dublin Championship.  He played all the way up to adult level, captaining the team and winning the Intermediate Footballer of the Year Award.  A versatile performer, he played at full-back, midfield and full-forward.  He played Sigerson Cup football for Trinity College and also played with the Dublin Juniors.  He gave 100% in every game he played and led by example from the front, being physically very strong but also very fair.

Off the field, he managed the Ladies’ football team and was a huge advocate for ladies’ football. His wife Sinead Leahy also played on that team.
Donal fulfilled many other roles across the Club for many years, including as a financial sponsor, a member of the Club Executive, a selector with our Senior footballers and as a stalwart of the Club’s Golf Society.

He was Chairman of the Development Committee for our new clubhouse and was a driving force behind both the concept and the delivery of the project, putting in endless hours to ensure the Club got the high-quality, modern clubhouse that we have today.  Our clubhouse stands as a lasting tribute to the massive dedication and commitment given by Dónal and colleagues at that time.

He will be greatly missed by all his friends in Lucan.

Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís.  Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.

Funeral arrangements to follow.
