IHC St Peregrines v. Lucan Sarsfields Inters
16th August 2025 18:30
A dramatic and high-scoring clash saw Lucan Sarsfields Inters edge past St Peregrines 2-20 to 1-18 in a fiercely contested encounter that went right down to the wire.
The game opened at a frantic pace with both sides trading early wides before St Peregrines got the scoreboard moving with a point from play. Peregrines looked sharp in attack, picking off scores from play and frees, with their forwards (particularly numbers 11, 13, 14, and 15) finding space regularly.
Lucan, however, kept in touch through the reliable free-taking of Joey Dunne and clever play from Cian McHugh, who struck a couple of excellent scores. The turning point of the half came on 30 minutes, when Lucan were awarded a penalty, calmly dispatched by Dunne to give them a vital boost.
Despite Peregrines’ dominance in open play, the sides went into the break separated by a single point. Half-Time: St Peregrines 0-12, Lucan Sarsfields 1-8
The restart saw Lucan come out strongly, with points from Mark Gormley, McHugh, and Dunne again. Peregrines responded with frees and well-taken points, but a series of wides between the 14th and 21st minutes hampered their momentum. Lucan’s substitutes made a huge impact, Eoghan O Connor strengthening the back line, Rob Keher winning clean ball and Darragh Meehan, who scored from play and later struck a decisive goal in the 33rd minute. Ryan Clancy and Liam Fitzgerald also chipped in with crucial scores as Lucan stretched their lead.
Peregrines refused to lie down, and a brilliant goal from number 11 in the 32nd minute gave them hope. However, Lucan’s greater accuracy in front of goal told in the end, with Dunne landing further frees to seal the win.
Lucan’s ability to convert their chances and the tenacity and effort of the forwards particularly Liam Fitzgerald, Evin Dowling and Conor Dillon coupled with Joey Dunne’s accuracy and Meehan’s late goal proved the difference in a tight and entertaining encounter. MOTM Liam Fitzgerald for his efforts on and off the ball.
Final Score St Peregrines 1-18 (21) Lucan Sarsfields Inters 2-20 (26)
